Bunduff Lough and Machair/Trawalua/Mullaghmore SAC

Bunduff Lough and Machair/Trawalua/Mullaghmore is a Natura2000 site and is designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) under the Habitats Directive. The aim of the Habitats Directive is to maintain or restore the favourable conservation status of habitats and species of community interest.

Bunduff Lough and Machair/Trawalua/Mullaghmore SAC is located on the south side of Donegal Bay, 5KM South-West of Bundoran, falling in the counties of Sligo and Leitrim. The area of the SAC is 4387.182571 hectares

The area was designated as a Special Area of Conservation due to the presence of tidal mudflats and sandflats, large shallow inlets and bays, reefs, Marram Dunes (White Dunes), humid dune slacks (Grey Dunes), machairs, juniper scrub, orchid-rich calcareous grassland, alkaline fens, marsh fritillary (Euphydryas aurinia) and Petalwort (Petalophhyllum relfsii).

Conservation objectives for this site include:

  • Maintaining the favourable conservation condition of Mudflats and sandflats not covered by seawater;
  • Maintaining the favourable conservation condition and conserving community types in Large shallow inlets and bays;
  • Maintaining the favourable conservation condition and stable distribution of Reefs,
  • Restoring Marram Dunes and maintaining the range of coastal habitats;
  • Maintaining the favourable conservation condition of Grey Dunes with herbaceous vegetation;
  • Maintaining the favourable conservation condition of Machairs and the range of sub-communities;
  • Restoring the favourable conservation condition of juniper scrub;
  • Maintaining the favourable conservation condition of alkaline fens; and
  • Maintaining the favourable conservation condition of Petalwort.
